New York City!

for some strange reason UArts doesn’t have a “fall break” or parents weekend like most other colleges so i decided to create my own! I took off my friday classes and went to New York City! I have a lot of friends from home that go to school in New York so it wasn’t a problem finding a place to stay. It was so easy getting there as well. I took the train that was 1 hour and 30 mins for $60 the bus is only $20 but it takes 2 1/2 hours. It was so great just to get away from school for a little bit, also it was nice to see someone i know from home!! I went to MOMA and saw Cyrano on Broadway and Christopher Weldon’s dance company. It was so much fun and i was able to see and do so much. I had the choice of going to New York for school but decided against it. It’s such a big city that i would feel so lost. I’m starting to really love Philly, I know one day i’ll end up in NYC but for now i need to focus and study here. I’m already planning my next trip to NYC in November!!

University of Penn

When I was younger and I thought about going to college I always thought of a big pretty campus where I would go to the football games and eat in the cafeteria… but obviously that didn’t happen. So this weekend my friend Maddi and I decided to take an adventure over to Univ. of Penn and see what we were missing.
To get to U of Penn was really easy all we had to do was walk to city hall where we took the subway right to U of Penn. It was my first time ridding the subway so it was a little exciting! U of Penn has such a beautiful campus. We were standing waiting for Maddi’s friend when all of sudden U of Penn’s marching band comes charging at us we had to jump out of the way before they ran us over.
Then Maddi’s friend came and we went to eat in the cafeteria. A real cafeteria!! Here at UArts food is always a problem there is no meal plan and no cafeteria. The cafeteria was amazing at U of Penn so many different choices of food. It would be so nice to wake up every morning and not have to think about cooking that day. After we ate we went to the football game. I love football and need a team to root for. U of Penn doesn’t have the best football team but… at least they have one! They played George Town and won 48 to 6 so it was a very eventful game. U of Penn has this tradition that at the end of the 3rd quarter everyone throws toast, I don’t know why but it was fun to fling toast at the cheerleaders.
After the game we walked around the campus more and bought Penn shirts. Penn will be my college team that I root for, even thought their football team will never make any kind of championship. I have heard thought that they have a great basketball team so I’m getting ready for that season. Even though I’m going to miss out on the “typical college life where AP, and SAT scores matter I totally belong at an arts school.n1454610102_1892155_7004.jpgn1454610102_1892153_6387.jpgn1454610102_1892154_6697.jpg

2nd floor!

so i live on the 2nd floor of spruce also known as the GLOBAL AWARENESS floor! being the only global awareness floor of UArts we get some special treatment…. like free dinner every two weeks. The first week we had a Mexican night where we all brought a different mexican dish and then broke open a pinata filled with candy and condoms! Then we had an “all american breakfast” night where our RA made us pancakes with whipped cream and strawberries and eggs. After that we all bowled in the hall ways and played twister. Then tonight was our third dinner together. We did this world poverty exercises that helped us understand the different economic statuses of countries and their powers. Then we all ate a ton of Chinese food! I love living in the dorms i have developed such close friends with the people on my floor. Visiting other dorm buildings or floors i don’t feel like they are as close as we are. I know everyone on my floor and someone is always in the hall to say hi to. Woo hoo GLOBAL AWARENESS REPRESENT!!!s1454610102_1889728_1528.jpgTwister in the halls!Me about to swing at the pianta!pa031157.jpgFortune Cookie!!

Zoo!

Wow another week went by way too fast here! I finally had a full week of classes which was good, now I can start to learn when and where everything is- I still get so confused where I’m going. Every class I get my ass kicked in dance but I’m learning a ton!
Since I live so far away I don’t have the luxury to travel home like a lot of my friends. It’s really weird being so far away from home and my family. This is probably the first week I have been really homesick. I think I finally realized that I’ll be here for a long time. It’s starting to feel more like college and less like summer camp. I ichat and talk to my parents all the time but I’m still counting down the days until I get to go back to Florida!!!
I’ve started to get more comfortable with the city though and traveling around by myself which is very helpful. I’ve also started to explore the city more like some friends and I went to the zoo this weekend, which was fun just to be silly and laugh for awhile! It was such a fun time. p9221097.JPG

Dance Dance and more DANCE!

This week has really felt like I’ve been in college! I have so much homework all of a sudden- it’s crazy! For my Fundamentals of Dance class I have to research four dance companies and it’s turning out to be way harder than I thought, and I’m always reading for dance history! One of my electives is Spanish Dance which I am starting to really enjoy it’s a completely new dance for me to learn so I feel like I’m learning how to dance all over again. All of my dance teachers are so different so it’s great that we get such a wide variety of styles and techniques. I have three modern classes a week two are Horton based and one is Humphry based. I’ve never done Humphry until this week right now we’re on the floor for most of the class. The technique is all about weight shifts and letting your body parts have weight.
Last weekend I took a jazz/modern class at Koresh Dance Company which was such a great class, I love it so much! Then that night they had an in-studio performance that Enza and I went to where different dance companies or groups from around Philly performed. I loved seeing what dance was in Philly, some of the pieces we saw were amazing and some… not, but I was just really excited to see a live performance! The Philly Fringe is going on right now so the city is filled with theatre and dance it’s great!! I have some friends who take classes at The Rock School, which is a ballet training program. There is just so much to do as a dancer in Philly that I don’t think I can possible get bored- at least not now when I’m discovering it all!
The temperature dropped this week now it’s a perfect 79 outside!
