The Home Stretch
<Two more drawing classes, two more 2-D classes, three more 3-D classes, five more art history classes (we’re required to show up during crit week), three more writing classes… and one more graphic design class.
OH MY GOD.
Where did the time go? Kaitlin and I were discussing our first days at UArts. How we can’t put a finger on why Ms. Johnson looked different when we met with her and Mr. Rossman on the day before the first day of classes. How a lot of the kids thought Mr. Shaver was going to be one of those asshole teachers on the first day of his class, but the next week everyone’s mind changed.
Actually, while we’re on the subject of Mr. Shaver… I didn’t think he was going to be one of those asshole teachers. I was pretty deceived, though, when he walked into the room. That’s not a bad thing! That summer, when I registered for classes, I thought to myself, “What a fun name… But he sounds like an old guy with no hair, but a really amazing personality.” I sat in my seat the first day of class and was like, “I have no good looking teachers. What in the world is going on.” And then? Mr. Shaver walks in. (No, there is no crush involved, I’m getting to the point so chill!) I look up and was like O______O WHOA.
He wasn’t old. Nor was he short. And he certainly was NOT bald. Here he was, a tall, kind of lanky, full head of hair, middle-aged man with the straightest look on his face. I could tell that I was going to have fun with this man.
He started talking (couldn’t tell you what he was talking about), and then he looked at me. “You’re excited aren’t you?” I continued to stare at him and I said, “Yes.”
Because you know what? I WAS. I was excited to be in college, to be sitting in a studio room. EXCITED!
And here we are, just weeks away from the semester’s close. WHAT HAPPENED?
Next thing you know, we’ll be graduating. Scary.
Anyway, back to what I was originally talking about: Ally said earlier that it was like last week we were at orientation. I can remember a lot of what happened during orientation…
We’ve come a long way~~ And now teachers are shoving final projects down our throats and running around like their heads were chopped off with a machete. Believe it or not, I’m feelin’ kind of mellow. No rushing here, as most of my big projects are out of the way, so to speak… Okay, not really: photo-manipulation project in 2-D, city drawing/cereal box drawing for drawing, plaster cubes/mobiles/extra credit frieze for 3-D, timeline for art history, Darjeeing Ltd. paper/artist statement for writing, musical instrument composition/cd cover for graphic design…
It sounds like a lot, but it’s really not.
~~~
I also learned that UArts, although probably the happiest place on Earth, has a staff that doesn’t play~ If they feel like something’s serious, they crack down on it. They care more about your education than you do in some aspects. They’re not afraid to boot people out for reasons that may seem bogus, but in the big picture, may be the right thing to do.
A kid in my section got thrown out of our drawing class on Tuesday because he missed class too many times. Sounds stupid at first, but if you think about it, why not? If he’s not going to bother showing up, why have him on the roster? He said that he’s still going to continue coming to that class, regardless of whether or not he’s on the roster. Hm.
I’m jumping around, but this is how my thoughts are atm.
